• What is a PhD?
    A PhD is the highest degree in higher education in Algeria. It is awarded after completing advanced research training, culminating in the writing and public defense of an original research dissertation in the student’s field of specialization.


    Legal and Regulatory Framework

    PhD training is organized in accordance with legal texts and regulations issued by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, including:

    • Executive Decree No. 22-208 (system of studies and training).

    • Decision No. 991 (procedures for admission to and organization of the PhD dissertation).

    • Decision No. 1548 relating to the accreditation of institutions authorized to provide PhD training.


    Admission Requirements

    To enroll in PhD training in Algeria, the applicant must:

    • Hold a Master’s degree (LMD system) or an equivalent qualification.

    • Have a specialization compatible with the PhD field applied for.

    • Register for and pass a national competitive examination (according to the annual schedule).


    Registration Procedure and Competitive Examinations

    • Applications are submitted through the national digital platform PROGRES (paperless).

    • The process includes selecting the university, uploading documents, and confirming the application.

    • After an initial evaluation of applications, candidates sit for nationally organized examinations.

    • An annual schedule is published specifying registration and examination dates.


    Duration and Content of Training

    PhD training generally lasts at least three (3) years and may extend longer depending on the progress of the research. It includes:

    • Attendance of advanced courses or research modules depending on the specialization.

    • Conducting original scientific research under the supervision of an academic advisor.

    • Writing a PhD dissertation that is publicly defended before a specialized committee.


    Preparation and Defense of the Dissertation

    After completing the research and training requirements, the student submits the scientific dissertation, which is defended before a specialized scientific committee in accordance with university regulations.
